VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. VICE News Exclusive: Part 1 of "The Fight Against Ebola" - 🤍 West Africa is being plagued by a new outbreak of Ebola — a terrifying disease that causes its victims to bleed to death from the inside out. Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast. VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population. The Cannibals' War (1996): As the trial of former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor begins, we bring back an exclusive report exposing the atrocities committed by Taylor's men. Filmed in the middle of the civil war, it includes footage of Taylor's supporters preparing to eat a human heart and a rare interview with Taylor. Subscribe to Journeyman here: 🤍 Our film opens with gigantic US military helicopters hovering over Monrovia. The crackle of Kalashnikovs, 'Liberian music', echoes around the empty streets. This is a city with no laws of humanity as we know them. We discover a band of teenage NPFL fighters at a roadblock. Dead bodies lie at their feet, their chests sliced open from top to bottom, in the style of an African voodoo sacrifice. A boy brandishes a bucket, from which he proudly pulls a human heart. 'If I find my enemy I eat him', he boasts. 'But I only eat military men, not civilians. I am a human being after all.' Some fighters believe that by eating an enemy you get his power. Charles Taylor sums up: 'We have heard of outright cannibalism but this is an issue of war. There is no civilised war. Death is death.' For now the peace is holding. The UN are disarming troops on the streets. The market in Monrovia is full of people once again. But many think that Liberia's young cannibals have gone too far: a doctor prophesies disaster when they become the future leaders. Cost of Living in Liberia DISCLAIMER : For Copyright Matters please Contact us directly.... Email Address emmastopten🤍gmail.com. Thanks Hello Displorers, welcome to another informative video presented to you by Displore and thanks for watching. The housing, transportation, education and health cost of any country is a great indication of the cost of living of any country. The cost of living in Liberia is the reflection of the quality of life shown in how much is spent on housing, transport, education and health. That is why in this video, we shall examine the cost of housing, transportation, education and health care in Liberia to determine cost of living in the country. But first we need to understand what cost of living really is. The cost of living is the amount of money needed to cover basic expenses such as housing, food, taxes, and healthcare in a certain place and time period. The cost of living is often used to compare how expensive it is to live in one city versus another. The cost of living is tied to wages because if expenses are higher in a city, such as New York, for example, salary levels must be higher so that people can afford to live in that city. The cost of living can be a significant factor in personal wealth accumulation because a salary can provide a higher standard of living in a country where daily expenses such as rent, food and entertainment are less. In contrast, a high salary can seem insufficient in an expensive country. If you are new here, welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss any of our videos. The cost of living is Liberia is a great reflection of the incomes of those living in the country. It is imperative to get an understanding of salaries and wages in Liberia to evaluate its cost of living because a high salary will imply lower cost of living and a lower wage range will imply prices will be unbearable for the individual or family hence higher cost of living. Wages in Liberia Generally, salaries in Liberia vary with experience, degrees as well as where you work. More to these disparities, expats or nationals working with multinational companies tend to earn more than the average workers in Liberia. A person working in Liberia typically earns around $360.81 per month and salaries range from a lower average of $91.46 to $1,609 which represents the highest average but we should note that these are averages and the actual maximum salaries are higher. This is the average monthly salary including housing, transport, and other benefits and as mentioned earlier salaries vary drastically between different careers and those working with international organizations earn far higher than these estimates here. Cost of Accommodation in Liberia The rents and cost of buying a house in Liberia is hugely determined by its location. The monthly rental of a one-bedroom apartment in the city centre can cost about $1,533.33 but for the same apartment in the suburbs, you will pay less to the amount of approximately $62.50 a month. Monthly rental of a 3-room apartment in the center will set you back up to $3,600 but the same 3-bedroom apartment in the suburbs will be about $308.33. This simply goes to solidify the fact that a property’s location influences its price to a great extent. Buying a house in Liberia also comes with such differences to a greater extend. Price per Square Meter to buy an apartment in the city centre is largely expensive and sometimes a black-market affair given the negotiations are often kept under wraps. The price per square meter to buy an apartment outside of the city centre will cost about $6,824.32 and given the huge differences we saw with renting within the city centre compared to the outskirts, we can have an idea of how expensive it is to buy a house in the city centre. Cost of Transport in Liberia Transport costs are a key factor in determining market integration as it merges the various sectors to form a whole. Consequently, keeping transport costs low is critical to economic development, particularly for the common man situated in isolated ruralcommunities. In Liberia in 2015, the price of gasoline, which is an imported commodity, was twice as high in isolated markets than in the capital. The preliminary findings of a recent study recognise five challenges, including truck, road maintenance, corruption on the road, as key transport industry factors undermining the cost of transportation in the country. In Liberia, a one-way ticket to fly locally cost about $2.50 while a monthly pass for a regular ticket is an average$17.00.Taxi fares start depends on the distance, the waiting time as well as other factors which are usually discussed. Normal tariff is about $3.00 but normal taxi fares per 1km is between $0.

In a coup d'tat on April 12th 1980, Samuel Doe, an indigenous Liberian seized power in Liberia. As a result, President Tolbert and 13 of his cabinet ministers were executed. A band of rebels from Ivory Coast led by Charles Taylor entered Liberia, and demanded the resignation of the sitting President Samuel Doe. This resulted in a brutal civil war that led to the murdering of the Samuel Doe. This brief documentary narrates in detail how it all unfolded.
Liberia’s government is leading a campaign to get African Americans to come and settle there, offering citizenships and a “chance to reconnect with their roots”. This movement is not new, with freed enslaved people from the US having arrived some 200 years ago to build the colony that became the Republic of Liberia. This set off a troubled period in Liberia’s history as the new arrivals clashed with the Indigenous tribes. Memories of that time, and the lessons they teach, are what local architects want to protect now as they try to stop the destruction of old properties to make way for more new arrivals.
